Description
Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is very common problem (39 to 115 cases/100,000 population). Validated diagnostic algorithms in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism are often not used correctly. Despite reasonably good predicting tools (Wells score, Geneva scores), D-dimer, computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA), and VQ scans are ordered inappropriately. In the same way, risk stratification in case of PE is a complicated process, and from Caprini's score to Hestia criteria, we have yet to find the perfect tool. Different parameters on 2D Echo scans for risk stratification are controversial and interpreted differently by different investigators.
Learning Objective 1
Minimize numbers of CTPA to diagnose PE.
Learning Objective 2
Use D-Dimer, CTPA, and VQ scans for suspected cases of PE appropriately.
