Description
Pulmonary embolism is the third-leading cause of death in the United States. The incidence of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CETPH) is around 4% following acute PE. However, dyspnea and exercise impairment after acute PE is more common. We plan to have a case-based interactive session with a focus on short- and long-term care plans in patients following acute PE. This will include discussion on selecting appropriate follow-up imaging, anticoagulation duration, age-appropriate cancer screening, and when to obtain hypercoagulability work-up. The session will discuss real-world challenges of identifying, evaluating, and treating patients with post-PE syndrome.
Learning Objective 1
Describe how to run a post-PE clinic visit: identify need for cancer screening, duration and compliance of anticoagulation, and hypercoagulable work-up.
Learning Objective 2
Define the natural progression of Acute PE -- clot resolution and expected recovery of dyspnea.
